Amidst several sad news that are received from Nigeria in the past few days, it is refreshing to receive some good news. It is reported that the Nigerian Senate passed a Bill that aims to address stigma and discrimination associated to HIV and AIDS. Having worked in Nigeria for close to a decade and with key populations highly marginalized in HIV programming, I cannot but appreciate this effort greatly.

The Bill is said to have been passed by the House of Representative, thus it is currently undergoing harmonisation at the National assembly. I hope that the process of harmonisation will be expedited and that the President will prioritise this Bill and sign it into law, regardless of the pressure of 2015 election campaign.

In response to the Bill, a Nigeria Coalition called the Coalition for the Defense of Sexual Rights released a press statement today. Click here for the press statement.
